"Tipping" for First Class Upgrade

January 9th, 2009
  • I've always been curious about this, and I suspect I've seen other people do this.

Has anyone ever or has anyone ever seen anyone "tip" an agent at the gate or ticket counter in order to get an upgrade. I thought I saw some people do it on a Mexicana flight last year.

  • Would agree that "tipping" is like "bribing" for an upgrade. I wonder if any GA gives away upgrades for the sole purpose of receiving a tip, however?

  • Since we're clearly not talking about "tipping" with "miles and points" but rather "money," I'm going to move this out of MilesBuzz ... please continue this discussion in the TravelBuzz (http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forumcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=TravelBuzz!&number=11&DaysPrune=5&LastLogin=) forum.

  • This might work easily in a third world country. The tip better go to the head flight attendant though, or maybe even the pilot.

  • GAs on US carriers would be fired for accepting bribes.
